Epic's Quixel is making its whole Megascans library free on Fab again, and its new terms let you train AI models on Megascans and Megaplants.

"The full Quixel Megascans library is going free," Quixel posted on Thursday morning, adding that "Fab listings will update between now & Nov 12, so check back if an asset you want isn’t free yet" (Quixel on X). Megascans are 3D models and materials made from real-world scans of rocks, plants, ground and props, and GameFromScratch puts the library at "23,000+" assets (GameFromScratch). Quixel also says it has "updated the terms for all Quixel assets so you can now train AI models on Megascans and Megaplants" (Quixel). If you bought Megascans or a Quixel Bundle on or after Jan. 1, 2025, Quixel will refund it to your Epic Account Balance once you log in and accept the latest terms. Refunds will show up "by the end of 2026," and "You keep your license and get the new AI rights." Studio licenses "continue under the terms of your contract." One catch so far: GameFromScratch says it saw "no updates to the linked asset license, nor in the Fab EULA" yet. This follows Epic's Oct. 30 change that lets developers train AI on their own Unreal projects (our post).

Try it: if you build scenes in Unreal or Blender, claim the Megascans you want once their Fab listings flip to free, and check again after Nov. 12. The library has gone free and then back to paid before, so don't count on it staying this way. If you plan to train a model on them, save a copy of the updated license once it's posted.
