The indie game store said on Bluesky Monday evening that it was adding generative AI disclosure filtering to more parts of the site, "including our search results page." The filter relies on creators' own answers. A project gets the No AI tag only when its creator explicitly says no on itch.io's AI disclosure form, gaming.net explains, so pages that never filled in the form drop out too. When we checked Tuesday evening, itch.io showed 433,485 games with the No AI tag, out of 1,773,968 games in total.
The same evening, itch.io made the disclosure form required to create or edit pages in its tabletop, books, comics and soundtracks categories. Game assets have required it for two years. It also posted that it had "just deleted a couple terabytes of ai slop," and pointed creators to its quality guidelines, which say to avoid "excessive amounts of automatically generated or AI-generated content." Two days earlier, itch.io said the number of game pages created per day had doubled in the past two months. Engadget notes that Steam also has disclosure rules but no store filter for them.
What this means for you: The No AI filter is only as good as creators' honesty, and a missing tag doesn't mean a game uses AI. Many creators may simply not have answered the form yet.
