OpenAI has published a help page saying that starting in December, usage on the Plus, Pro and Business plans "will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex as we bring the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience" ([OpenAI Help Center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001625-understanding-chatgpt-and-codex-usage-limits)). Usage will be measured in tokens, so how much of your allowance a request uses depends on the model and the task, and more advanced models and complex tasks use more. Instant chat won't draw from it. OpenAI says it expects most users won't have to wait for a reset more often than they do now. You'll see your combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings → Usage, and if you hit the limit you can wait for the reset, upgrade your plan or buy credits. The page doesn't give an exact December date or how big each plan's allowance will be. The change first leaked as a line in ChatGPT's checkout page spotted by @btibor91 ([reported by @iCleanAI](https://x.com/iCleanAI/status/2116521689777623203)), and the help page drew a lot of pushback on X from heavy Codex users worried that coding will eat into their chat time ([@VraserX](https://x.com/VraserX/status/2116618517671764469)).

*What this means for you:* if you mostly use Instant chat, little should change. If you lean on Codex or the more advanced models, coding and chat will come out of the same pool from December, so keep an eye on Settings → Usage once it shows the combined number.
