Epic has removed two rules from the Unreal Engine end-user license agreement (EULA) that barred developers from using their own projects to train AI ([Unreal Engine on X](https://x.com/UnrealEngine/status/2116185368819372148), [Epic](https://www.unrealengine.com/ue-devs-can-now-choose-to-train-ai-models-on-their-projects)). One stopped people from using Unreal Engine, including its source code, as training input for generative AI. The other barred using MetaHuman characters and animation curves to train or test AI or to build a database. Both are gone, and the change applies to all versions of the engine. New users are prompted to accept the updated terms automatically, and existing users can choose to accept them on the EULA acceptance page. Epic says the change "doesn't grant Epic any rights to your content or code," so this is about what you can do with your own work, not about Epic training on it. MetaHuman Creator, MetaHuman Animator and Mesh to MetaHuman are covered. Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fortnite islands aren't, because they fall under Fortnite's own rules, and studios with custom licenses need to talk to Epic. Fab, Epic's asset store, is unchanged, and sellers can still mark their assets "NoAI." Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said earlier this week that the company was working on this change ([Game Developer](https://www.gamedeveloper.com/programming/epic-is-updating-the-eula-to-allow-ai-training-on-outputs-from-unreal-engine-and-metahuman)).

*What this means for you:* if you build in Unreal, you can now use your own levels, renders and MetaHuman animation to train or fine-tune AI tools without breaking the license, once you've accepted the new terms. Check the license on any Fab assets in your project before you do.
