Microsoft AI released MAI-Image-2.7-Preview on Tuesday, a model for editing images you already have rather than making new ones from scratch ([Microsoft AI](https://microsoft.ai/news/mai-image-2-7-debut/)). Microsoft says it can restyle or relight a whole scene, change text and symbols so they still blend into the picture, and restore or enhance older images.

Artificial Analysis, which runs independent blind tests, ranks it #2 for image editing, close behind OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, and #1 in four of the seven edit types it measures, including scene and style edits and text or symbol edits ([Artificial Analysis on X](https://x.com/ArtificialAnlys/status/2115097540320506069)).

On Arena's image-edit leaderboard, where people vote between two results without knowing which model made them, it's #3 overall, 45 points up on the earlier MAI-Image-2.6 ([Arena on X](https://x.com/arena/status/2115101113666134276)). For now it only edits images; Microsoft says text-to-image generation is "coming soon." Microsoft also made the older MAI-Image-2.6 and 2.6-Flash generally available to developers in Microsoft Foundry ([Microsoft AI on X](https://x.com/MicrosoftAI/status/2115106982730342888)).

*Try it:* Microsoft says you can try the editing features today on MAI Playground, Arena and Artificial Analysis ([Microsoft AI](https://microsoft.ai/news/mai-image-2-7-debut/), [Mustafa Suleyman on X](https://x.com/mustafasuleyman/status/2115099284224008200)). Give it one of your own photos and ask for a lighting or style change, which is where the tests say it's strongest. There's no developer API or price for 2.7 yet.
