OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra on Monday.

It's built for "computer use," meaning it reads what's on a screen and clicks and types across apps for you, and OpenAI says it also writes more naturally ([OpenAI on X](https://x.com/OpenAI/status/2114780711664398349), [OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)). It's rolling out now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and developers can call it in the API as gpt-6.1-terra ([OpenAI on X](https://x.com/OpenAI/status/2114780720170164735)). Like GPT-6.1 Sol, it isn't in regular ChatGPT chat; OpenAI's help center lists both as available only in ChatGPT Work and Codex. In the API it costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens.

That's half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra ($2/$12) and GPT-6.1 Sol ($2/$10), and a tenth of GPT-6 Astra ($10/$50) ([OpenAI API docs](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6.1-terra)). (A token is a small chunk of text, about three-quarters of a word.) OpenAI says Terra matches GPT-6 Astra on its Agents' Last Exam test at a tenth of the price per token and finishes tasks more than three times faster.

It also says Terra's ChatGPT Work and Codex usage limits stretch further than GPT-5.6 Terra's, and much further than Sol's or Astra's. On the Terminal-Bench 4.0 coding test, Terra scores 50.3%, up from 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. These are OpenAI's own results, not independent tests, and OpenAI itself still recommends Sol or Astra "for the most complex coding tasks." The model can take in about 1 million tokens at once and comes with OpenAI's highest cybersecurity risk rating, "Critical," so it ships with extra safeguards.

*What to weigh:* if you pay for the API and your work is mostly clicking through apps, filling in forms or quick screen tasks, Terra is the cheap option to try first. Keep Sol or Astra for hard coding. Prompts longer than 272K tokens cost twice as much for input and 1.5 times as much for output, so very long jobs won't be as cheap.
