Elon Musk says SpaceX closed $40 billion in debt to buy GPUs, and warns that most smaller AI cloud companies won't survive.

Replying to investor Chamath Palihapitiya on X on Sunday, Musk wrote that "debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers." He said SpaceX "closed $40B of debt for GPUs" because it is investment grade and earns money from Starlink and rocket launches, and that "the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation" (Musk on X).

Elon Musk on X, October 25, 2026, replying to Chamath Palihapitiya: debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company without substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs. The 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation.

Neoclouds are newer companies, such as CoreWeave and Nebius, that rent out AI chips. In follow-up replies, Musk said the money is mostly callable debt (debt the borrower can repay early) for GPU purchases arriving in "Q1 and Q2," not a major factor this quarter, and that "SpaceX is not buying any neoclouds." Reuters notes it was "not immediately clear" what Musk meant by "closed" or whether investors had agreed to pricing, and that Reuters had reported earlier this month on SpaceX talks to raise $40 billion for Nvidia chips (Reuters via CNA).

Reuters via CNA, October 25, 2026: it was not immediately clear from Musk's post what he meant by the deal being closed or whether investors had agreed to pricing. Reuters reported earlier this month that SpaceX was in talks to raise about $40 billion to buy Nvidia chips.

SpaceX has guided to $35 billion to $40 billion of capital spending this quarter.

What to weigh: this is Musk's own read on rivals, and he runs a competing AI business. If you rent GPUs from a smaller cloud provider, it's a reason to keep your models and data easy to move, not a reason to panic.
