OpenAI is undercutting Anthropic on price to win business customers' coding work, and at least one big customer has flipped, The Information reports.

Reported (The Information): in a Saturday story, The Information says OpenAI's push to undercut Anthropic on price is "producing some results" (The Information, paywalled). Its main example is Rippling, an HR software company. In May, Anthropic's models handled 57% of the coding work done by hundreds of Rippling engineers, and OpenAI's handled 16%. Now OpenAI's models handle 52% and Anthropic's 18%, because Rippling wanted to cut costs and OpenAI turned out cheaper, CEO Parker Conrad told the outlet.

The Information card shared on X, October 24, 2026: OpenAI's efforts to undercut Anthropic on price are producing some results. Rippling's coding work was 57% Anthropic and 16% OpenAI in May, and is now 52% OpenAI and 18% Anthropic, as the company sought to cut costs and OpenAI proved cheaper, CEO Parker Conrad said.

The story also says an OpenAI discount offered to DataCamp, which sells online data and AI courses, depended on using OpenAI's Codex coding tool instead of rivals like Claude Code or OpenCode. DataCamp's CEO, Jonathan Cornelissen, said moving its customer-facing product to discounted OpenAI models too could mean "an 80% to 90% decrease in costs." It adds that OpenAI let a US bank with more than $7 billion in assets double its ChatGPT seats to 500 without raising its roughly $40,000 annual contract.

This comes a week after Replit's CEO said OpenAI is now the default model in Replit's app builder, though Claude models are still available there (TechCrunch). Neither company has published these deals. Their public pricing pages list standard plans, and OpenAI's says Enterprise plans are priced through its sales team with "volume discounts" (OpenAI, Anthropic).

What to weigh: these are negotiated deals for big companies, not price cuts you can get at checkout. If your team pays for coding models, though, it's a sign that asking for a better rate, or splitting work across providers, may pay off right now.
