Perplexity added a local-first mode to its Mac app on Oct 20. Both the AI model and the agent running the task stay on the Mac, so it can plan, reason and work through files with no internet connection. With permission it can use local files and Mac apps like Notes, Messages, Mail and Numbers. It only sends something to the cloud when you approve it, for example when a task needs fresh web info or browser use. It launches with Qwen 3.6 or Perplexity's own PPLX Pro as the local model, and Perplexity recommends an Apple silicon Mac with at least 36 GB of memory. It's included for Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers, not free users. *What to weigh:* if you already pay for Perplexity and have a Mac with 36 GB or more, it's worth trying for private email and message chores. On smaller Macs, wait.
