If you are starting a game in late 2026 and plan to have an AI agent do a lot of the typing, both big engines now have an official answer. Unity gives you a free command-line tool with an MCP mode and first-party plugins for Claude Code, Codex and Grok. Unreal Engine 5.8 ships an Experimental MCP plugin, and Epic publishes its own Claude Code plugin. They get there differently, they charge differently, and they ask you to learn different things. (Weighing Godot too? See [Godot vs Unity vs Unreal for AI coding agents](/posts/2026-10-18-godot-vs-unity-vs-unreal-ai).) We checked every price and policy below on the vendor's own page on October 18, 2026. We have not run a hands-on test of either engine for this piece.

## The AI built into each editor

**Unity.** Unity's AI suite opened as a beta for everyone on Unity 6.0 or later in May. Unity's [launch post](https://unity.com/blog/unity-ai-how-to-get-started) (May 5) describes an in-editor assistant with three modes, Ask, Plan and Agent, that reads your scene, GameObjects, components and packages. [GamesIndustry.biz reported](https://www.gamesindustry.biz/unity-launches-suite-of-ai-tools-to-help-creators-accelerate-game-development) that it can roll changes back instantly and generate placeholder materials, sounds, cubemaps, and 2D or 3D assets. Unity has since [retired the "Unity AI" name](https://unity.com/features/ai) and now just calls these "Unity's AI tools." They are not Unity Muse, which Unity says is deprecated.

Unity's [AI Guiding Principles](https://unity.com/legal/unityai-guiding-principles) (updated August 19) say the assistant runs on Gemini, Claude, Kimi K3 and GLM models. Every generated asset is tagged with "Unity AI" metadata, so you can find and remove placeholders before you ship. Training on your content is off by default. Separately, Unity's Inference Engine (formerly Sentis) runs models you bring yourself, locally or on players' devices.

**Unreal.** Epic's assistant lives mostly outside the editor. The [Epic Developer Assistant](https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/the-epic-developer-assistant-ai-powered-developer-assistant-for-unreal-engine-5-6/2659525) on the Epic Developer Community answers Unreal documentation questions and writes C++. An in-editor AI assistant plugin exists in 5.7 and 5.8, but it is marked Experimental and off by default, as our [Best AI help for Unreal](/tools/best-ai-for-unreal) page explains. Unreal has no built-in generative asset tools yet. At [State of Unreal](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/state-of-unreal-2026-top-news-from-the-show) in June, Epic showed diffusion workflows that use a scene's depth, normals and camera as inputs, and said it plans to release those tools early next year.

## Plugging in the coding agent you already use

This is where things moved most in 2026.

**Unreal: MCP inside the editor.** [UE 5.8](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/unreal-engine-5-8-is-now-available) added an Experimental MCP plugin that lets "any model you want" connect to the engine and your project. Epic lists Blueprints, assets, levels, materials and meshes among the exposed systems. Epic's [Unreal MCP doc](https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/unreal-engine/unreal-mcp-in-unreal-editor) says the server can write client configs for Cursor and Codex, among others. On top of that, Epic publishes an official, MIT-licensed [Unreal Engine Skills for Claude Code plugin](https://github.com/EpicGames/unreal-engine-skills-for-claude-code-plugin), with skills, a session hook and safety rules. We covered it in [Epic's official Unreal Engine plugin for Claude Code](/posts/2026-10-18-epic-unreal-claude-code-plugin). Our step-by-step setup is in [How to set up Unreal Engine 5.8's built-in MCP server](/tools/unreal-engine-mcp-setup).

Epic is building toward more. Its [UE6 plan](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/state-of-unreal-2026-top-news-from-the-show) includes "a Model Context Protocol (MCP) with integrations for Claude, Gemini, and others."

**Unity: a CLI first, MCP as a fallback.** Unity took a different path. The [Unity CLI](https://unity.com/blog/meet-the-unity-cli) drives a running Editor from the terminal: GameObjects, scenes, assets, live C#, builds and tests. Unity has [deprecated the MCP server](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/unity-cli/replace-mcp-server-unity-cli) that used to live inside the in-editor assistant package. In its place, `unity mcp` in the CLI serves agents that cannot run shell commands. Unity's docs say its direct `unity command` and `unity eval` calls are "faster and use fewer tokens than MCP." That is Unity's own claim. The CLI is free, runs offline against a local Editor, accepts connections on localhost only, and does not need a Unity AI subscription.

On top of the CLI, Unity's [official plugin for Claude Code](https://unity.com/blog/unity-plugin-for-claude-code) (September 9) installs 29 Unity-written skills, covering UI Toolkit, 2D and tilemaps, URP, audio, navigation, physics, in-app purchases, multiplayer and localization. Unity's [AI tools page](https://unity.com/features/ai) now lists the plugin for Claude Code, Codex and Grok, with setup docs for [Codex](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/ai/unity-plugin/codex) and [Grok](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/ai/unity-plugin/grok), and says "CLI, MCP server and Unity's official plugin are all free to use with no concurrency limits." Unity also offers an AI Gateway that connects a third-party agent inside the Editor without spending Unity Credits.

One thing to watch: older tutorials, including Unity's own [May MCP post](https://unity.com/blog/unity-ai-mcp-how-to-get-started), describe the now-deprecated in-editor server and say it needs an AI subscription. Unity's current pages say otherwise. Follow the [CLI migration doc](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/unity-cli/replace-mcp-server-unity-cli). Our step-by-step setup is in [How to connect Claude Code, Codex, Grok or Cursor to Unity](/tools/unity-ai-agent-setup).

**Community options (Unofficial).** Both engines also have community MCP projects. For Unity, the best known are [CoplayDev/unity-mcp](https://github.com/coplaydev/unity-mcp) (MIT) and [IvanMurzak/Unity-MCP](https://github.com/ivanmurzak/unity-mcp) (Apache 2.0). Unity says its deprecation [does not affect them](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/unity-cli/replace-mcp-server-unity-cli). For Unreal, [Ludus AI](https://ludusengine.com/) is a paid in-editor plugin aimed at Blueprints. Its speed and cost comparisons against MCP are the vendor's own tests. All of these are **Unofficial**.

| Route | Unity | Unreal |
|---|---|---|
| Official agent bridge | Unity CLI (`unity command` / `unity eval`), plus `unity mcp` | Unreal MCP plugin (Experimental) |
| Official agent plugin | Claude Code, Codex, Grok | Claude Code |
| Cost of the bridge | Free | Free with the engine |
| Status | AI tools in beta; CLI and MCP mode supported | Experimental: "many features are incomplete or missing," per [Epic's doc](https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/unreal-engine/unreal-mcp-in-unreal-editor) |
| Unofficial alternatives | CoplayDev unity-mcp, IvanMurzak Unity-MCP (**Unofficial**) | Ludus AI, community MCP plugins (**Unofficial**) |

A structural difference matters for agents. Unity projects are C# scripts plus scene and asset files. Much of an Unreal project lives in binary `.uasset` files: Blueprints, levels and materials. That is one reason Epic routes agents through the editor rather than the files. One developer [put it this way on X](https://x.com/brenoazevedo/status/2110004748753498463): binary `.uasset` files make the job "harder for LLMs."

## AI asset pipelines

| | Unity | Unreal |
|---|---|---|
| In-engine generation | Generators (beta) for sprites, textures, materials, sounds and 3D, via first-party and partner models listed in Unity's [third-party AI terms](https://unity.com/legal/unityai-guiding-principles). Spends Unity Credits | None shipped. Diffusion tools planned for early next year ([State of Unreal](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/state-of-unreal-2026-top-news-from-the-show)) |
| Characters and motion | Bring your own | [MetaHuman Animator](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/unreal-engine-5-8-is-now-available) captures face and body from a single camera ("a webcam is enough"). Windows plugin on Fab. Mesh to MetaHuman now conforms whole bodies |
| On-device AI in your game | Inference Engine runs your own models in the player | [NVIDIA ACE plugins](https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/build-on-device-ai-companions-with-the-nvidia-ace-game-agent-sdk-and-unreal-engine-5-plugins/) for speech recognition, a small LLM and TTS (**Unofficial**, NVIDIA) |
| Third-party 3D generators | [Meshy plugins](https://www.meshy.ai/integrations) for Unity (**Unofficial**) | Meshy and Tripo list Unreal bridges (**Unofficial**). Meshy's plugin page lists UE 5.4–5.7 |

Whichever engine you pick, the generator you pay for is usually the same company. Meshy, Tripo and Hyper3D prices are on our [3D compare tables](/pricing-limits), and the free open-source options are on [Paywall Dodgers: AI 3D](/paywall-dodgers/ai-3d). Unity puts some generation inside the editor and bills it in credits. Unreal leaves it to plugins for now. To run the free models on your own PC and bring the result into either engine, see our [free image-to-3D pipeline guide](/tools/free-image-to-3d-pipeline).

## What it costs

All prices are in US dollars, checked October 18, 2026.

**Unity.** From Unity's [plans page](https://unity.com/products) and [2026 pricing page](https://unity.com/products/pricing-updates):

- **Personal: free** if your revenue and funding over the last 12 months are under $200,000. It publishes to web, desktop, AR/VR and mobile. The "Made with Unity" splash screen became optional on Unity 6, per Unity's [September 2024 post](https://unity.com/blog/unity-is-canceling-the-runtime-fee).
- **Pro: $2,310 per seat per year prepaid, or $210 per seat per month.** It is required above $200,000. Pro adds **publishing to game consoles** and Apple Vision Pro. Prices rose 5% on January 12, 2026.
- **Enterprise:** custom pricing, required above $25 million.
- **Runtime fee: none.** Unity [canceled it](https://unity.com/blog/unity-is-canceling-the-runtime-fee) on September 12, 2024. Its [Editor terms](https://unity.com/legal/editor-terms-of-service/software) let you ship "without royalty, revenue share, or a runtime fee" for projects made with Unity 6 or earlier. That clause names Unity 6 and earlier, and we did not find published terms for Unity 7 yet.
- **AI credits:** Personal users get a 14-day trial, then a [$10-a-month subscription](https://unity.com/features/ai) for the in-editor assistant. The [plans page](https://unity.com/products) lists 1,000 monthly credits for Personal, 2,000 with Pro and 3,000 with Enterprise. [Credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/ai/credits/credits-about). The CLI, MCP mode and official plugin cost nothing.

**Unreal.** From Epic's [licensing page](https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/license):

- **Free**, with source code access and "all platforms & features."
- **5% royalty** on "all lifetime gross revenue above $1M that is directly attributable to the UE product." Revenue from the Epic Games Store is royalty-free.
- **Seats** are only for non-game commercial users above $1 million a year: $1,850 per seat per year.
- **No AI subscription from Epic.** The MCP plugin ships with the engine. You pay for whichever agent you connect.

**Your agent is a separate bill under both.** Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan ([Claude pricing](https://claude.com/pricing)). Cursor, Codex and Copilot plans are compared in [Which AI coding plan is worth it at $20, $100, and $200 a month](/posts/2026-10-14-coding-plan-20-100-200).

The two models charge at different points. Unity charges per seat once your company passes $200,000, whatever any one game earns. Unreal charges per product once that game passes $1 million in gross revenue. Which one costs less depends on your team size and sales. We have not modelled it, so check the numbers against your own plan.

## Learning curve and languages

- **Unity** uses C#. Unity 7 brings [CoreCLR](https://unity.com/blog/unite-seoul-keynote-2026-recap), with .NET 10 and C# 14 promised during the 7.0 cycle. The first alpha [still targets C# 9](https://gamefromscratch.com/unity-7-alpha-released/), and Unity gives no date for .NET 10. Unity says Unity 7 has "no breaking changes" from Unity 6. Note that [Unity 6.0 LTS support ends this month](https://unity.com/releases/unity-6/support) (October 2026), and 6.3 LTS runs to December 2027.
- **Unreal** uses C++ and Blueprints, its visual scripting system. Epic's [UE6 plan](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/state-of-unreal-2026-top-news-from-the-show) moves "the gameplay programming model to Verse," the language already used in Fortnite's UEFN. If you start in UE5 today, expect another language shift when UE6 arrives.
- **With an agent in the loop**, the official skill packs matter as much as the language. Unity's plugin ships 29 Unity-written skills. Epic's plugin teaches Claude how to use Unreal MCP safely: save often, wait for compiles, check every result.

## Platforms and performance

Neither company publishes a head-to-head benchmark, and we have not run one. What each vendor says about its own engine:

- **Unreal 5.8:** Epic says Lumen Lite keeps "much of the visual impact" of its global illumination at a lower GPU cost, so games can run at 60 fps on Nintendo Switch 2. It also says MegaLights targets 60 fps on current-generation consoles ([UE 5.8 post](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/unreal-engine-5-8-is-now-available)). These are vendor claims.
- **Unity 6.6 and 6.7:** WebGPU is production-ready in 6.6. At Unite Seoul, Unity showed Surface Cache GI, real-time global illumination for URP, holding 60 fps on a Samsung Galaxy S26. It previews in the 6.7 alpha ([Unite Seoul recap](https://unity.com/blog/unite-seoul-keynote-2026-recap)). These are vendor demos.
- **Consoles:** Unreal's free tier lists all platforms. Unity needs a Pro seat to publish to consoles.
- **The two engines are also getting closer.** Unity showed a Unity game simulated in Unity and rendered inside Unreal at Unite Seoul, part of the [Unity–Epic partnership](https://unity.com/news/unity-and-epic-games-together-advance-open-interoperable-future-video-gaming). Early access is targeted for 2027.

## What builders report on X

These are individual experiences, not tests.

- "Unity CLI is 10-15x faster and significantly token efficient than Unreal's MCP. I had to port my Android game to Unity so that Claude Opus 5.5 can help me." — [@doublenagames, Oct 9](https://x.com/doublenagames/status/2108580879882998052). That speed figure is one person's estimate.
- Unity CLI with the Codex/Claude plugin is "much more performant and much less Token hungry than an MCP." — [@oncedesigned, Oct 8](https://x.com/oncedesigned/status/2108244517669523660)
- Cursor's own account said that in a demo, Cursor reached for MCP because it had read an MCP skill. Removing that skill made it use the Unity CLI skill, "and the scene finished minutes later." — [@CursorHQ, Oct 7](https://x.com/CursorHQ/status/2107760409943912929)
- On Unreal: "I moved from a custom UnrealMCP plugin path to ModelContextProtocol + EditorToolset, then used MCP to implement and add the real loadout initialization flow." — [@KitchenGun124, Jun 26](https://x.com/KitchenGun124/status/2070505295726698760)
- Also on Unreal: "Are you using the Unreal MCP or having codex build everything in C++ classes? The MCP is pretty limiting." — [@UnrealSensei, Sep 4](https://x.com/UnrealSensei/status/2095935841101078868)

## What to weigh

- **Cost:** Unity is free under $200,000 in revenue and funding, then charges per seat ($2,310 a year prepaid for Pro). Unreal is free until a product passes $1 million in gross revenue, then takes 5%. Your agent subscription is extra under both.
- **AI hookup:** Unity's CLI, MCP mode and official plugin are free and cover Claude Code, Codex and Grok. Unreal's MCP is free but Experimental, and Epic's official plugin covers Claude Code.
- **Built-in AI:** Unity has an in-editor assistant and asset Generators, in beta and paid in credits. Unreal's in-editor assistant is Experimental and off by default, and its generative tools are not out yet.
- **Platforms:** Console publishing needs Unity Pro. Unreal's free tier lists all platforms.
- **Lock-in and change:** Both engines are mid-transition. Unity 7 promises no breaking changes, but its newest C# features have no date. UE6 moves gameplay code to Verse, with Early Access targeted for the end of 2027.
- **Who each suits:** Unity's official skills lean toward 2D, UI, web builds, in-app purchases and multiplayer. Unreal brings MetaHuman, single-camera capture, Lumen and MegaLights in the box. Pick the one that matches the game you are actually making.
