If you want an AI agent to do much of the typing on your next game, the engine you pick decides how much help the agent gets. Unity and Unreal now ship official hooks for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and others. Godot ships nothing official, but its community has built a pile of free plugins, and Godot's plain-text project files turn out to suit agents well. We checked licences, prices and plugin repos on October 18, 2026. We have not run our own hands-on test of the three engines for this piece.

For the two-engine version with more detail on Unity and Unreal, see [Unity vs Unreal Engine 5 for AI-assisted game dev](/posts/2026-10-18-unity-vs-unreal-ai).

## Agent support: official vs community

**Unity (official).** Unity's free [CLI](https://unity.com/blog/meet-the-unity-cli) drives a running Editor from the terminal, and `unity mcp` serves agents that can't run shell commands. Unity [deprecated](https://docs.unity.com/en-us/unity-cli/replace-mcp-server-unity-cli) the older MCP server that lived in its assistant package. Its official [Claude Code plugin](https://unity.com/blog/unity-plugin-for-claude-code) (September 9) installs 29 Unity-written skills; Unity's AI page also lists Codex and Grok. Unity says the CLI, MCP mode and plugin are free. Setup steps: see our [Unity guide](/tools/unity-ai-agent-setup).

**Unreal (official, Experimental).** [UE 5.8](https://www.unrealengine.com/news/unreal-engine-5-8-is-now-available) added an Experimental MCP plugin that exposes Blueprints, assets, levels, materials and meshes to "any model you want". Epic's [Unreal MCP doc](https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/unreal-engine/unreal-mcp-in-unreal-editor) says it can write client configs for Cursor and Codex. Epic also publishes an official [Claude Code skills plugin](https://github.com/EpicGames/unreal-engine-skills-for-claude-code-plugin). "Experimental" means Epic may change or remove it. Setup steps: see our [UE MCP guide](/tools/unreal-engine-mcp-setup).

**Godot (community only, all Unofficial).** The Godot Foundation ships no AI features. Instead, the [Godot Asset Library](https://godotengine.org/asset-library/asset?filter=MCP&sort=updated) lists a dozen-plus MCP plugins updated in September and October. Two stand out:

- **Godot AI** by hi-godot (**Unofficial**). MIT licence, about 3,060 GitHub stars, last pushed October 18 ([repo](https://github.com/hi-godot/godot-ai)). Its README says it connects Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, Cursor, Antigravity and others to a live editor, with "46 tools and 120+ operations". GDScript is fully supported; C# is text-only: it writes `.cs` files but doesn't build .NET or report compiler errors. Reviews on its [Godot Asset Store page](https://store.godotengine.org/asset/dlight/godot-ai/) include negative ones; read them before installing. Our [Godot and Roblox MCP setup guide](/tools/godot-roblox-mcp-setup) walks through installing it.
- **Godot-MCP** by IvanMurzak (**Unofficial**). Apache-2.0, about 295 stars ([repo](https://github.com/IvanMurzak/Godot-MCP)). Version 0.29.0 shipped October 18 with Terrain3D, Tilemap and Dialogic modules ([releases](https://github.com/IvanMurzak/Godot-MCP/releases)).

There is also [Godot MCP Pro](https://y1uda.itch.io/godot-mcp-pro) by y1uda (**Unofficial**), a paid plugin sold on itch.io for $15 (listing read October 18). Note that the Godot Foundation's [June 30 contribution policy](https://godotengine.org/article/contribution-policy-2026/) restricts AI-written pull requests **to the engine itself**. It does not govern games you make with Godot.

A twist: some Godot users skip MCP entirely. Because Godot scenes and scripts are plain text, an agent like Claude Code or Codex can edit the project files directly and run Godot headless to test. The most-liked Godot agent post we found this month was titled "Godot without MCP is the way" (see the X section below).

## How well the AI assistants know each engine's code

No one has published a head-to-head test of how well AI models write GDScript vs C# vs C++ for these engines. We found no such benchmark, and we have not run one. What does exist:

- **Godot-only agent benchmarks.** [GameCraft-Bench](https://github.com/FreedomIntelligence/gamecraft-bench) (FreedomIntelligence) asks agents to build 140 playable Godot games end to end. The best configuration in its leaderboard table, Claude Code with Opus 5, scored 68.44% overall, and the authors say agents "remain far from reliable end-to-end game generation". [GameDevBench](https://github.com/waynchi/gamedevbench) (333 Godot tasks) and the [JamBench paper](https://arxiv.org/html/2606.19830v2) are similar. JamBench found runtime pass rates fall from 80.4% on small projects to 5.7% on large ones.
- **Why researchers chose Godot.** The JamBench authors picked Godot because its scenes, scripts and config are "human-readable plain text", which they call "naturally compatible with LLM processing", unlike engines that rely on binary formats and graphical editors. That is a structural point, not a quality ranking.
- **C# and C++ are huge general languages**, so models have seen far more of them than GDScript overall. But engine-specific APIs (Unity's component model, Unreal's macros and reflection system) are where agents trip, which is why Unity and Epic ship skill packs.
- **Blueprints are visual and stored as binary**, so an agent can't read or write them as text. It needs the MCP plugin to touch them. One builder on X said MCP is "pretty limiting" and asked whether others have Codex write C++ classes instead (quoted below).

## What it costs

All prices in US dollars, checked October 18, 2026.

| | Godot | Unity | Unreal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | Free, [MIT licence](https://godotengine.org/license/). No royalty, no seats, no splash screen requirement | Personal free under $200,000 revenue and funding. Pro $2,310 per seat per year prepaid or $210 a month ([pricing](https://unity.com/products/pricing-updates)); Pro needed for consoles | Free; 5% royalty on lifetime gross above $1 million per product ([licence](https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/license)) |
| Agent hookup | Community plugins: free (MIT / Apache-2.0); one paid option | CLI, MCP mode and plugin free | MCP plugin and Epic's Claude plugin free |
| Built-in assistant | None | $10 a month after a 14-day trial for Personal ([Unity AI](https://unity.com/features/ai)) | No AI subscription from Epic |
| Console publishing | Not in the open-source engine. Godot officially supports only Steam Deck; Switch, Xbox and PlayStation need a third-party porting company or W4 Games' paid middleware, plus approval from the console maker ([Godot docs](https://docs.godotengine.org/en/4.5/tutorials/platform/consoles.html); [Godot console page](https://godotengine.org/consoles/)). W4's prices are quote-only, annual plans ([W4 Consoles](https://www.w4games.com/w4consoles)) | Pro seat required | Included |

Under all three, the agent itself is a separate bill (Claude, Codex, Cursor and so on). See [Which AI coding plan is worth it at $20, $100, and $200 a month](/posts/2026-10-14-coding-plan-20-100-200). One builder on X reports pairing Godot AI with a local model (quoted below), so a fully free stack is possible if your hardware can run one.

## What builders report on X

These are individual experiences, not tests.

- "Godot without MCP is the way. … One prompt and 7 hours." The poster says the run stopped only because they hit their weekly usage cap. — [@Graalitoo, Sep 21](https://x.com/Graalitoo/status/2102185653492764873) (about 1,000 likes)
- "Don't dump 190+ MCP tools on a Godot agent. Gate them." — [@Dovhisto1, Oct 11](https://x.com/Dovhisto1/status/2109402005697700226), pointing to a community MCP (**Unofficial**) that starts with about 24 tools.
- A developer who moved from Unreal: "started playing with Claude with MCP … Kept hitting walls. Unreal is much just too cumbersome. Decided maybe using Godot." — [@HomieSanto, Oct 15](https://x.com/HomieSanto/status/2110563983778300370)
- Godot plus several MCPs: "with godot mcp, I also gave it blender and meshy mcp, then looped it on a /goal for 5 hours." — [@bugsmusher, Sep 27](https://x.com/bugsmusher/status/2104257570085208363)
- Critical, after reading Godot AI's issue tracker: "filesystem ops refused ~60% of the time (#1120), Windows startup hangs 193s, C# is text-only, no compiler errors". The same post says GDScript support is "solid" and that the plugin needs Godot 4.7+. — [@clawgirlbobo, Oct 7](https://x.com/clawgirlbobo/status/2107653516940722192). These figures are the poster's reading of GitHub issues, not a test.
- Local models: "LocalLLaMA users pair the UD_Q4_XL quant with hi-godot's MCP server. The agent sets up Godot, writes scripts and screenshots the running game." — [@dextune, Oct 12](https://x.com/dextune/status/2109656765357060297)
- Unity: "Unity CLI is 10-15x faster and significantly token efficient than Unreal's MCP." That speed figure is one person's estimate. — [@doublenagames, Oct 9](https://x.com/doublenagames/status/2108580879882998052)
- Unreal: "Are you using the Unreal MCP or having codex build everything in C++ classes? The MCP is pretty limiting." — [@UnrealSensei, Sep 4](https://x.com/UnrealSensei/status/2095935841101078868)

## What to weigh

- **Official support vs community support.** Unity and Unreal back their agent hooks themselves (Unreal's is Experimental). Godot relies on Unofficial plugins that can change or stall; check the last release date and the issues page.
- **Text vs binary.** Godot's all-text projects let agents read and edit everything, even without a plugin. Unreal's Blueprints and assets need the MCP plugin. Unity sits in between.
- **Language.** GDScript is small and Godot-specific. C# (Unity, and optional in Godot) and C++ (Unreal) are much larger languages, with engine-specific patterns the official skill packs try to teach. No independent test compares how well agents write each one.
- **Cost and licence.** Godot is MIT and free forever. Unity is free until $200,000, then per seat. Unreal is free until a game passes $1 million, then 5%. Your agent plan is extra in every case.
- **Consoles and big-studio features.** Unreal includes console publishing and tools like MetaHuman and Lumen. Unity needs Pro for consoles. Godot needs a third-party porter or paid middleware (quote-only).
- **Scale.** Independent Godot benchmarks show agents do well on small projects and fall off sharply on large ones. Plan for human review whichever engine you choose.
