Epic's official Unreal Engine plugin for Claude Code is going viral, but it has been out since June
Epic's Unreal Engine Skills for Claude Code plugin is in Anthropic's official marketplace. It adds skills, a hook, and safety rules on UE 5.8's MCP server.
Epic Games' "Unreal Engine Skills for Claude Code" plugin lets Claude Code drive a running Unreal Editor. This one is official, not a fan project. The source lives in Epic's GitHub account under an MIT license, and Anthropic's plugin page lists it as made by Epic Games, under the display name "Unreal Engine MCP."
It isn't new. Epic engineer Thomas Mansencal announced it as an open-source companion plugin on June 24, 2026, and Anthropic merged it into its official marketplace on June 26. The current version, 3.1.1, landed September 16. It went viral on X this weekend, and Epic CEO Tim Sweeney reposted one of those posts on Sunday morning. When we checked on October 18, the plugin page showed 871 installs.

What the plugin adds
The tools themselves come from Unreal. The README counts "hundreds of tools" across "30+ toolsets," and they come from UE 5.8's built-in Unreal MCP server once you enable its ModelContextProtocol and AllToolsets plugins. The Claude Code plugin adds instructions on top:
- An
unreal-mcpskill. It teaches Claude how to find and call those tools, plus safety rules: save before and after any bulk change, wait for compiles to finish, check every result, and watch for Play-in-Editor. Version 3.1.1 replaced a blanket ban on parallel calls: Claude now runs calls side by side only for independent work and does one at a time when they touch the same asset. Epic's server docs still say clients should not issue overlapping calls. - Two authoring skills. create-toolset helps you write new tools in Python or C++, and unreal-skill helps you write project Agent Skills.
- A SessionStart hook. It adds a short note telling Claude it's in an Unreal project. It needs bash.
- Proxy instructions. If your engine build includes Epic's optional proxy, Claude's connection stays open while the editor restarts.
What it costs and what you need
The plugin is free. Claude Code is not: it needs a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Console account, and the free plan doesn't include it. Pro is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly. Max starts at $100 a month.
- Unreal Engine 5.8. Epic's docs put the server there and mark it Experimental: "many features are incomplete or missing." The plugin README doesn't name a minimum version.
- The editor open, with the server started (
ModelContextProtocol.StartServerin the console). - macOS, Linux, or Windows with Git Bash or WSL. On plain PowerShell, the README says the tools still work, but the hook won't run.
Using Cursor or Codex? Epic's server writes configs for both. The plugin is for Claude Code only.
Epic's security notes are blunt: the plugin gives Claude "broad, live access" to the editor, and one tool runs arbitrary Python. Epic says to commit your work before a long session and to avoid --dangerously-skip-permissions.
Try it
Set up the server with our UE MCP guide. Then, in Claude Code:
/plugin install unreal-engine-skills-for-claude-code@claude-plugins-official
Start the server from the editor console with ModelContextProtocol.StartServer, and commit your project first.
