Anthropic puts 5% of its shares into a new public benefit fund

Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned LLC that gets 5% of the company's shares.

By Anthony Littlewolf Perez

Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund today at about 11:07 AM PT. It's a wholly owned LLC that gets 5% of the company's shares, pending stockholder approval. The board can add up to 2% more for every 50% rise in Anthropic's value above a baseline it hasn't published yet. Anthropic says the fund could make large donations to nonprofits or "direct distributions to specific populations." It named AI's effect on jobs as one example, an area where it has already committed $200 million. It also says none of the fund's equity will go to lobbying or political giving. Add the co-founders' pledge to donate 80% of their equity and an employee donation match that about half the staff use, and Anthropic says roughly 20% of its shares are now committed to the public good.

What to watch

Claude prices, plans and limits don't change. The open questions are the stockholder vote, the valuation baseline, and the governance details Anthropic says it will share "in the coming months," plus an upcoming public benefit report. Anthropic hasn't put a dollar figure on the stake.
