On October 15, [Google Search](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/updates-ai-mode-overviews-explore-web/) said inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews will appear more often, and higher in the response. It is testing a block at the top of an answer that highlights one or two official sites and says why each link is useful.

The same post says the number of people using [Preferred Sources](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/16379181) has grown by more than 7 times since the start of the year. Preferred Sources carousels for timely articles are rolling out to more places and languages. This week Google also started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode, linking to their Search profiles.

## What it costs

Nothing. This is a Search display change, not a new plan.

## Should you switch

If you publish, the part that changes your traffic is the link placement, not a setting on your site. Preferred Sources is the lever a reader controls. [Google's publisher guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/preferred-sources) says only a domain or subdomain can be picked, not a subdirectory, and the site has to appear in the picker.
