Tim Sweeney says Epic has a "huge pivot" underway toward AI
Epic's CEO said on October 12 that developers are being moved around to retool for AI, after crediting AI for a September rise in Fab seller revenue.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney posted on X on October 12: "We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration," Unite.AI reported. According to the report, Sweeney said the goal is not doing the same work with fewer people, but letting everyone at Epic build more, with the benefits reaching teams that use Unreal.
The Fab claim
Unite.AI says that on October 7, Sweeney posted that seller revenue on Fab, Epic's 3D asset marketplace, rose significantly in September. He attributed it to developers using AI assistants to build scenes while buying building blocks from Fab. The report gives no figure.
What Epic has already shipped
At State of Unreal in June, Epic said Unreal Engine 5.8 includes an Experimental Model Context Protocol plugin that connects models such as Claude or Gemini directly to UE projects. It also showed diffusion workflows that use depth, normals, and camera data from 3D scenes as conditioning, and said it plans to release those tools early next year. Unreal Engine 6 Early Access is targeted for the end of 2027.
Context
In March, Epic laid off more than 1,000 employees. Unite.AI reports that Sweeney's note at the time said "the layoffs aren't related to AI."
What it means for Unreal users
Nothing changed in the engine on October 12. The concrete AI feature today is the experimental MCP plugin in 5.8. The pivot is a statement about where Epic is moving its people.
