Best overall free pick: KritaClosest to Lightroom: darktableClosest to Photoshop: PhotoCraft
Krita is a mature painting and photo editor from KDE, the best overall free pick when an early Photoshop-style app is still rough. It runs on a normal desktop. Photoshop-only habits take some relearning.
darktable is a mature raw developer and photo library, closest to Lightroom for people who shoot raw. A normal desktop is enough, and a faster graphics card helps some steps. The layout is darktable's own.
PhotoCraft is an early Photoshop-style editor, for people who want a free app with that kind of layout. It runs on the desktop and in the browser. The project's own notes, updated October 13, 2026, put professional readiness around 45 percent, and Adobe did not make it.
LightCraft is an early Lightroom-style photo library, for people who want that kind of layout while it is still rough. It runs as a desktop app. Adobe did not make it.
Limits
Generate pictures on your own computer. Midjourney's hosted gallery stays on Midjourney.

Best overall free pick: ComfyUIEasiest to start: Fooocus
ComfyUI is a free canvas where you connect steps to run open image models, the best overall pick for local pictures. The useful models need a strong graphics card. You build the workflow yourself.
Limits
Fooocus is a simpler local image app with a prompt box, the easiest start if a canvas of connected steps feels like too much. The project has been quiet since December 2025.
